Posthumous Memoirs

Spoiler: this song is about death.

There has been a lot of it in my family over the past few years. It is the natural course of life and all that, but every now and then it still makes me stop and think about it.

This time, I decided to write a song about it.

There was one small problem.

I have never died before.

That creates a bit of a paradox.

So I went back to Machado de Assis.

I have talked about The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas before. It is a book I keep returning to. Brás Cubas, a dead man who is a writer, speaks from beyond the grave.

This experiment began with a simple question: if I were to die today, what would I have to say about work, love, and life in general?

I died of plague and boredom But still had the luxury to open a window from beyond. to laugh at my own mortality! My work was weird, I gotta say. It felt like a groundhog situation, in a way. By midnight, I'd call it a day. By morning, it would start all over again! Now looking from the other side Victory was late! Life was a vain delusion and the rest Was misery! I met a cute redhead in June. Soon I gave her a copy of my key. We planned to travel overseas. By August she left. And stole all my weed! Now looking from the other side Love was too late! Life was a vain delusion and the rest Was misery! I went ahead and booked a flight for December. I was buried late September! Now looking from the other side Death was just in time! Life was a vain delusion and the rest Was misery!
